Chicago Diner {Comfort Food for the Vegan}
Friday, August 20, 2010
Hello from Milwaukee! Today has been a long day and full of adventures at that! We started our trip at 10am and it is ending as soon as I post this entry which is close to midnight.
We started our trek from Michigan and we headed to Chicago. On the way we tried to find a Starbucks or Bigby but can you believe that in 3.5 hours there were not any coffee shops?? Very sad but we survived. We arrived in Chicago around lunch time and we had decided beforehand that we were going to stop at Chicago Diner. I had read about this meat-free restaurant in VegNews since the restaurant boasted being meat-free since 1983.
Since we thought we were eating sushi around 5-6pm we decided to go a little light on lunch so Ryan ordered the vegan potstickers which had tofu, cabbage and carrots with a nice dipping sauce along with a green salad with a house Italian dressing.

After we left, we made sure to ask for vegan brownies to go. Who could pass on those? As we left the diner, I started feeling queasy and I told Ryan, thinking perhaps the hot weather might be producing such symptoms, but the feeling was getting worse as I got in the car. Well, we had an hour's drive yet to Milwaukee and I knew this was more than just a feeling. I had to hurl folks. I told Ryan to pull up in a residential area so I could do the hurling business. It was horrible. I have not felt like this in almost a year and was sad that this had happened at a well-known restaurant.
I figure since I shared half my sandwich with Ryan WITHOUT him having any Thousand Island dressing, that the dressing perhaps had not been refrigerated. Could that be? It happened so darn quickly and I had no symptoms like this before arriving to the diner. I was famished in fact.
Question of the day: Should I call or email a manager and tell them what happened or should I blow it off and treat it as a weird fluke? Another thought came from Gone Pie indicating that maybe this was a result of Gluten overload. What do you think?
I paid good money for great eats and it feels like a waste. Please leave your opinions. All in all, the service was great, the place looked clean, and the food and brownies tasted delicious (those did not upset my tummy.) I just want to know what happened, you know? Food poisoning us not fun!
Tomorrow we hit a Cubs game. Have a good one!

have so much fun at the cubs game!! i'm a bit homesick seeing the stadium!
Better to be safe than sorry so I say call the manager and tell them. I'm wondering if it was the kale. As you pointed out maybe it wasn't washed or not thoroughly. But who knows? Could've been any of the produce or the dressing. Sorry to hear you got sick though! Bummer way to start things but hopefully the rest of your time will be nothing but fun memories! Have fun!!!
oh no!
I would call just in case there is a contamination issue that they aren't aware of. I hope you're feeling a million times better today.
Sorry you got sick! I would definitely consider that gluten could be the problem. If you really have a sensitivity, that sandwich was gluten overload! You should put the question out to the glutenfree crowd on twitter. Very helpful community. Go Cubs!
@G.- thanks! I wonder why we do not drive to Chicago more often since it is so close. It is a great place!
@HiHoRosie-Thanks for your comment. It is just plain strange. I have been eating alot more raw foods lately and I also thought maybe it was too much cooked foods. Weird.
@VeganLisa-Yes, I will call. You are right. It would not be great for other people to get sick.
@Gone Pie Vegan Bakery-I posted that part of the question on my post. That thought crossed my mind and I forgot to hone in on it.Hmmm..darn it for breaking my own rules.
Being sick to your stomach is the worst, but I have to give you a handclap for reporting on it so honestly and with such dry humor; this post cracked me up.
P.S. I still want to order that sandwich; your description sounded great until, you know, the hurling. Who knows what really caused the problem? But, what we've learned here is that you should always go with the fries. Potatoes are your friends.
You poor girl! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. If I was you, I would call the manager, just to be safe. They can at least reexamine the conditions in their kitchen. I hope you have a better day and enjoy the cubs game!
Oh that sucks. Sorry you got so sick! If you're going to contact them, do it right away (so they can get rid of the current supply of whatever it was...dressing...kale) Was the dressing vegan?? If it was,I would assume some time without refrigeration would be ok....but who knows.
Hope the rest of your trip is better!
I wouldn't wish food poisoning on my worst enemy, so sorry that happened to you!
It's a shame you felt sick afterwards but those potstickers look great!
What a bummer! I would totally call the restaurant. However, it could have just been the rueben in general. I love vegan ruebens, but always feel weird after eating one. I think they're just too rich!
I hope you have a good time at the game. I am a former Executive Chef and General Manager - you most definitely need to contact them, if nothing was wrong with the food then they will have no other incidents and it could have been a sensitivity for you. Generally food poisoning takes longer, but to be on the safe side, report it. Sorry that happened to you :(
I can't believe I was on Chicago last weekend. I miss it already and there is soooo much I need to explore!!
Oh no! I love the Chicago Diner, that sucks so bad you got sick! :[
I'd go ahead and email or call them. You might even get a meal on the house next time you're in town.
